On 15 July 2025 a successful Hubs4Circularity Community of Practice Webinar on “A Success Story from the Principality of Asturias: Wastewater Recovery” was held.
The topic was how reclaimed municipal wastewater can be used to significantly reduce freshwater consumption by industry in Asturias, where industrial use is a major part of the use of drinking water.
The project led to the investment of 14M€ in the regional wastewater treatment plant and the construction of 64 km of new pipelines with an investment of 41M€. The investments were significantly supported by the EU. Key in the project was that the industrial users jointly developed the specifications of the quality of the industrial water and that the treatment technologies were combined to reach the specifications at minimum CAPEX and OPEX. The goal is to reuse around 6 Mm³ of wastewater per year.
Reclamation will also reduce the cost of water for the industrial end-users: “A project with double impact: reduced freshwater make-up and reduced water discharge.” – Ignacio Vigil., IQPA
The project was developed in close cooperation between industry (DuPont Water Solutions, ArcelorMittal, EDP Renewables) represented by the association @IQPA and the public sector (Principado de Asturias). This is a great example of a large-scale circular water project in action, delivering both environmental and operational benefits.
Big thanks to all speakers and everyone who joined us live!
