Public procurement represents around 14% of the GDP in the EU, amounting to a staggering €2 trillion spent every year by public authorities on goods and services. Undoubtedly, it is an extremely promising tool for inducing system change towards sustainability. How can this powerful tool be deployed to accelerate the transition to circular economy? We will start at the EU level, first discussing the strategic work that the European Commission is doing, including the Big Buyers Initiative. We will then turn to 2 selected EU-funded projects to learn from their experience and to explore what they offer to other cities and regions.
